n8n for SAP S/4HANA®, built to SAP’s rules
Workflows and AI agents that clear the work around SAP: supplier mail, PDFs, spreadsheets, tickets and chat approvals. Every read and write goes through released SAP APIs, every agent through SAP’s endorsed pathways, and every exception ends with a person.

n8n just became an SAP platform decision.
SAP invested in n8n
SAP made a strategic investment in n8n and signed a multi-year partnership to build n8n into Joule Studio, its environment for building agents. n8n is no longer a side tool next to SAP. It sits on SAP’s own roadmap.
Agents now have a front door
SAP’s API policy supports published APIs used as documented and steers AI agents through managed routes such as the MCP Gateway in Integration Suite. An agent pointed straight at production, choosing its own calls, is the pattern to avoid.
Build now, carry it forward
Workflows built today on released APIs, with guardrails in the workflow and people on the exceptions, carry straight into the SAP world later. Shortcuts built today become rework.
More on the policy side in SAP’s API policy and AI agents: what changes for S/4HANA automation.
n8n works between the channels and the systems.
Most SAP work starts outside SAP: in a mailbox, a folder, a spreadsheet or a chat. That is the gap n8n closes.
Integration Suite stays the governed backbone for system-to-system interfaces. Camunda runs the long, cross-module processes. RPA covers the screens that have no API. n8n takes the work in between, and does it fast.
Pick by the job, not the logo.
Most SAP landscapes need two or three of these. We implement Camunda and n8n ourselves and work alongside your Integration Suite and RPA teams, so the line is drawn by the process, not by what we sell.
| n8n | Camunda | SAP Build Process Automation | SAP Integration Suite | RPA | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Intake from mail, documents, sheets and chat. AI extraction. Departmental automation. | Long-running processes across SAP modules and systems, with state, retries and SLAs. | Approvals, forms and process automation inside the SAP world. | Governed system-to-system interfaces, B2B and EDI at volume. | Desktop apps and screens that have no API. |
| Runs on | Your infrastructure or n8n Cloud. Joule Studio on SAP’s roadmap. | Your Kubernetes or Camunda SaaS. | SAP BTP. | SAP BTP. | Bot runners on desktops or VMs. |
| Built by | Automation teams and trained business builders. | Process and integration engineers. | Business users and citizen developers. | Integration specialists. | RPA developers. |
| Choose it when | You need speed, many connectors and a person in the loop. | The process runs for days, crosses modules and must survive locks and failures. | The process lives almost entirely in SAP with standard approvals. | The interface is contractual, critical or high volume. | There is no API today and none is coming. |

Where n8n earns its place next to SAP.
Patterns we design and build: 11 workflows and 6 agents. Most start as a workflow. Agents come in where the question is open.
Procure to pay
Quantity, price and date per item compared with the purchase order. Only deviations reach the buyer.
Extracted, matched against PO and goods receipt, clean cases posted through released APIs.
Checks blocks, receipts and approvals, then drafts the nudge and the supplier reply.
A Teams or Google Chat request becomes a purchase requisition after the requester confirms.
Order to cash
Orders read, checked against customer and material data, and created in SAP.
Service agents get live order and delivery status from SAP inside the ticket.
An accepted Salesforce or HubSpot quote creates the SAP sales order.
Finance and master data
Proposes a match with its reasoning. A person confirms, the workflow posts.
Completeness, tax ID and bank data verified before the partner is created.
Every change confirmed through a second channel before it goes live.
Price lists and bulk updates validated and approved before anything reaches SAP.
Logistics and supply chain
ASNs read from mail or EDI and turned into inbound deliveries.
Carrier emails and portal events become delivery and shipment status changes.
Late or blocked deliveries explained in plain words, with the owner and next step.
IT and integration operations
Failed IDocs and API calls explained in plain language and routed to the owner.
Jira or ServiceNow issues created with the payload and context attached.
Requesters see progress on their request without having to ask.
Agents read and reason. Workflows write.
A workflow follows a fixed path and calls released SAP APIs like any integration. An agent decides at runtime what to look at next. We keep that split strict: the agent proposes, rules on SAP data decide, a person approves, and the workflow books. That is also what keeps you aligned with SAP’s API policy.
Explain
Reads SAP data and explains it. Why is this order blocked? Why is this invoice unpaid? Nothing changes in SAP.
Prepare
Drafts the action: the supplier reply, the Teams nudge, the payment match. A person reviews and sends or approves.
Execute
Acts on its own inside strict limits. Only once levels one and two have earned trust, through SAP’s endorsed pathways, with scoped credentials and a full audit trail.
Most programmes should start at levels one and two. That is where trust is built. Level three is where guardrails, audit trails and SAP’s endorsed pathways stop being good practice and become non-negotiable.
Guardrails belong in the workflow, not in the UI.
Every check runs server-side as a step you can see, test and change. Nothing depends on someone clicking the right button.
From a spec to a running SAP workflow, before anyone grants access.
API and process audit
We map the process and confirm a released API exists for every read and write. Anything leaning on undocumented interfaces is flagged before it becomes a dependency.
Contract-first build
Workflows are built against SAP’s published service definitions and sandbox, using the same service paths as your S/4HANA. When system access arrives, you switch the credential, not the workflow.
Test set before go-live
Every AI step runs against a set of cases with known answers, so accuracy is measured before production rather than discovered in it.
Run with people in the loop
Approvals in Teams, Slack or Google Chat, failed runs routed to a named owner, and dashboards on volumes, exceptions and cycle time.
When the process outgrows a workflow tool.
Some SAP processes run for days, touch several modules and fight document locks. That is orchestration-engine territory. We run 20+ of those processes in production on Camunda for a global produce exporter: changes propagate in seconds instead of hours, and 95%+ of SAP lock errors heal themselves.
Knowing both sides is how each job lands on the right tool: n8n where speed and channels matter, Camunda where state and recovery matter.

Can n8n connect to SAP S/4HANA?
Yes. n8n reads and writes SAP S/4HANA and ECC through OData services, ideally the released APIs listed on the SAP Business Accelerator Hub. We use the SAP OData node for standard calls and plain HTTP requests for edge cases such as batch requests. SAP BTP services are reached through their REST APIs.
Is using n8n with SAP compliant with SAP's API policy?
It is when the workflow uses published APIs as documented, which is how we build. Fixed workflow steps call released APIs like any other integration. AI agents that choose their own calls should reach SAP through SAP's managed pathways, such as the MCP Gateway in SAP Integration Suite, rather than calling production APIs directly.
What does SAP's investment in n8n mean for SAP customers?
In May 2026 SAP made a strategic investment in n8n and agreed a multi-year partnership to build n8n into Joule Studio, its environment for building agents. For customers, it means n8n skills and workflows now have a path inside the SAP landscape. Workflows built today on released APIs with clear guardrails are the ones that carry over cleanly.
Should we use n8n or SAP Integration Suite?
Usually both. Integration Suite stays the governed backbone for system-to-system interfaces, B2B, EDI and high volume. n8n handles the work around SAP that Integration Suite was never designed for: mailboxes, documents, spreadsheets, chat approvals and AI steps.
Should we use n8n or Camunda for SAP automation?
n8n suits short workflows that start outside SAP and finish in minutes. Camunda suits long-running processes with state, SLAs, retries and many systems, such as order and freight synchronisation across SAP modules. We implement both, so the recommendation follows the process rather than a preferred tool.
Does n8n replace RPA in an SAP landscape?
Only where an API exists. Bots that touch data with an OData service or BTP API are the first to move. Stable web interfaces can move to browser automation inside a workflow. Desktop and terminal screens stay with RPA, triggered and logged from the workflow.
Should n8n be self-hosted or run in n8n Cloud?
Either works. Many SAP customers self-host n8n on their own Kubernetes for data sovereignty and network access to SAP, which we set up and operate. n8n Cloud suits teams that want no infrastructure to run.
